Responding to the Nagaland Joint Christian Forum (NJCF) call for a special prayer in Churches across the state, the Chakhesang Baptist Church Ministers’ Hill, (CBCMH) Kohima, at its Sunday morning devotional services held a special prayer, in the Church on February 10.

The NJCF had directed all Churches of various denominations in Nagaland to pray for an early Naga political solution and also pray for the unrest created by the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), 2016.

Rev. Dr. Vevo Phesao, senior pastor of CBCMH, who led the congregation in prayers, said that the 21 years of negotiations in the Indo-Naga political situation proved futile. Despite the efforts of negotiators, groups, and leaders, a solution has been kept on hold, he said. He felt that the Government of India, on its part, was apparently “cheating” the negotiators and the Nagas as a whole.

Rev. Dr. Phesao added that it was high time the public became aware of the such tactics. According to Phesao “vested interest attitude” of a few individuals, tribalism, and nepotism were the biggest stumbling blocks to achieving a Naga political situation.

Stating the CAB was the biggest threat to North Eastern states, Rev. Dr. Phesao urged the people to raise their voices against the bill. Once the bill is passed, “our future generation will become minority,” he asserted.

He also felt that one of the most disappointing aspects of the CAB was that it is based along religious lines, which, he opined, would pose a huge challenge particularly for religious minorities of the country, including the Christianity majority state of Nagaland.
